The eponymous King of Prussia Inn was originally built as a cottage in 1719 by William and Janet Rees, the Welsh Quakers who founded Reesville. The cottage was converted into an inn in 1769 and maintained a steady business during colonial times due to its proximity to Philadelphia, approximately a day’s ride by horse. Settlers traveling west to Ohio would spend their first night on the road at the inn. In 1774, the Rees family hired James Berry to manage the inn, which was dubbed “Berry’s Tavern” thereafter. General George Washington first visited the tavern on Thanksgiving Day 1777, while the Continental Army was encamped at Whitemarsh; Washington and the army bivouacked nearby Valley Forge a few weeks later.
